Checking in Across Northeast Asia
Dear Partner,
The world is currently engulfed by the single greatest health crisis of the past 100 years. No matter where you live on the face of the earth COVID-19 has affected each of us in different ways. However, there is always a ‘but’, the disaster of COVID-19 has forced us to think and to challenge ourselves – to face the future. When this ends – and it will end – what will we have learned? How will we approach travel and, most importantly, what can we share with our guests?
In the midst of this pandemic storm we have been given the gift of time, fleeting as it might be, to take stock, to think, to change. Using this quiet opportunity, we have reviewed and revised every aspect of our work: our itineraries, our library of information on the countries in which we operate, guide training, and much more. Prior to COVID-19 we were very busy, so this break has allowed us the time we needed to evaluate what works best for us and thus improving our offerings and bringing the A&K Hong Kong team even closer together.
This newsletter takes a closer look at what we have on our doorstep – stories and anecdotes from staff members in our region about what they have discovered, learned or experienced during these unprecedented times. We hope that you, like us, will see that even in the most challenging of situations, there is hope and discovery.
Finally, a Chinese saying comes to mind – it is timely and good to share:
“A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.”
With best wishes from the team at A&K Northeast Asia!

Glamping in Japan
Our Japan Country Manager, Hatsuko Tsujimura feels visitors will want to explore Japan far from the madding crowds and experience the country’s pristine nature. Nowhere is this better than in the Japanese Alps where you can enjoy the Snow Peak Field Suite Hakuba Kitaone Kogen a luxurious glamping site set at 1,200 meters (3,930 feet) surrounded in all directions by the magnificent snow-crowned peaks. Covering 15,000 square meters (or 4 acres) visitors are limited to a maximum of 16. Guests stay in beautifully appointed tents, each with spacious decks offering the ideal vantage point for mountain views and evening cocktails! A meal service is overseen by a noted gourmet chef while guests can enjoy a menu of activities including spa treatments, mountain hikes and nature walks. This wonderful glamping trip is a must for A&K guests!

Discover South Korea
South Korea is bolstered by its booming entertainment industry - “Parasite”, director Boon Joon-ho’s stylish cinematic masterpiece, swept the film world winning top honors at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards. On the music scene K Pop is winning new fans - not only in Asia - but the entire world. BTS, the most popular boy band, had their last album release open at number one on America’s Billboard Hot 100 Chart, a first for any Asian musical act. And let’s not forget Korean cuisine – bugolgi, bibimbap and kimchee – dishes enjoyed in restaurants around the world. Travel is not far behind - A&K Hong Kong has seen double-digit growth in inquiries (pre COVID-19). When travel returns, we are excited to share beautiful South Korea with our guests.

Children are the Future
While we wait for travel to reopen, we believe China offers incredible travel experiences – yes, it has a huge population but it is also the world’s third largest country in terms of landmass and 70% of China is either mountain, desert or plateau which means wide open spaces and plenty of places to explore! Just imagine motorcycling across the vast central plateau of Tibet, exploring ancient lost Silk Road cities or hiking the mountains and meadows of beautiful Yunnan … those days will come back soon!
Our Beijing and Shanghai chief representatives, Austin Zhu & Jessica Xu and their teams have continued to work hard to reimagine travel in China. Their abundant experience welcoming foreign guests provided them with the impetus to pivot and offer their wonderful services to domestic travelers. They planned child-friendly tours to places such as the Forbidden City and the Hutong area. They have also curated specialized tours where guests can learn about history and traditional arts and crafts. Parent feedback has been unanimously positive.
Take a look at some of their experiences in this video.

Hong Kong’s Hidden Secret – Heavenly Hiking
In spite of the challenges posed by COVID-19 we have used this time to plan for the future. One of our most exciting new concepts for future Hong Kong tours has always been here. Katharine Fok remarked “Working constantly all these years, I forgot just how beautiful Hong Kong’s nature is – do you know that we have 22 designated country parks and nature areas that are served by hundreds of kilometers of some of the most beautiful hiking trails found anywhere in Asia”. I have spent this pandemic, during the weekends, hiking and biking and have rediscovered this incredible natural treasure – all right here in urban Hong Kong”. So, going forward expect to see a lot of hiking highlights for our Hong Kong tours.
